A court in Mexico has sentenced three men to over 158 years in prison for the murder of two Australian surfers and an American friend. The ruling was issued on Friday, and the court also ordered the defendants to pay compensation to the victims' families.
Details of the Murder
The three defendants, Jesus Gerardo, Irineo Francisco, and Angel Jesus, were convicted last week of murder, armed robbery, violent theft, and car theft with violence. In 2024, the three victims were traveling to surf the Pacific coast of Mexico.
Brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, aged 30 and 33 respectively, and their American friend Carter Road, 30, were shot dead during a robbery in Baja California. The three were camping in a remote area near Ensenada on April 27, 2024, when they were attacked.
Social Consequences
Their search, conducted with the help of the FBI, led to the discovery of their bodies in a pit on top of the cliffs a few days later, with gunshot wounds to their heads indicating severe violence. These crimes sparked a wave of shock and concern in Ensenada, which is known as a popular surfing destination.
While Mexico generally struggles with widespread security issues, the area where these crimes occurred was considered a safe place for tourists. Paige Road, Carter's mother, said after the sentencing, "There will never be justice for losing a child, but these men will never hurt anyone again."
The Robinsons' parents traveled from Australia for the month-long trial and left the country after the initial ruling. Martin Robinson, the brothers' father, expressed, "Losing a son is hard for a parent, and we lost two sons." Debra Robinson also stated that what is most painful is that her sons "faced such cruelty in their last hours of life."
