The Bank of England has raised the interest rate from 3.75 percent to 4 percent, marking the first increase since August 2023. This decision was made to combat rising prices due to the war in Iran. The Monetary Policy Committee of the bank reached this conclusion with 8 votes in favor and 1 against.

Reasons for the Interest Rate Increase

The inflation rate in the UK reached 3.5 percent in September, and economic growth was better than expected. This has heightened the risk of rising prices and forced the Bank of England to increase the interest rate. Catherine Mann, a dissenting member of the committee, called for a 0.5 percent increase in the interest rate, but ultimately a 0.25 percent increase was decided.

Economic Consequences

Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, emphasized that the future of the UK economy depends on developments in the United States and the situation of the war in Iran. If the crisis in the Middle East is not resolved, further interest rate increases are likely. Estimates suggest that the inflation rate could rise to 5 percent in the second half of 2027 and reach 6.2 percent under adverse conditions.

This decision comes as John Healey, the UK Chancellor, presented a budget last week that responds to the rising energy prices over the past three years. Households and businesses in the UK are facing increased energy costs and loan rates, which could negatively impact the government's promises to address the cost of living.

At the same time, energy prices are expected to rise in January. Even if oil prices decrease in the coming weeks, the maximum energy price will significantly increase due to delays in its calculation. Estimates suggest that this price may reach £2150 in the first half of 2027.
