Two high school students in Michigan in 2024 saved their physical education teacher who suffered a cardiac arrest during a basketball game. They had recently learned CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) at a technical nursing training center and immediately rushed to help their teacher.

The Importance of CPR Training in Schools

According to estimates, around 350,000 Americans experience cardiac arrest outside of hospitals each year, and nearly nine out of ten lose their lives. In such situations, the speed of response and the initiation of CPR by nearby individuals can mean the difference between life and death. Since schools are places that most Americans pass through, they can provide the best opportunity to teach CPR to the next generation.

Successful Experiences in Other Countries

Countries like Denmark and Belgium have seen a significant increase in the rate of CPR by bystanders by implementing CPR training requirements in schools. From 2001 to 2010, Denmark more than doubled the rate of CPR by bystanders with the introduction of CPR training in schools, and the survival rate after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest increased more than threefold.

In the United States, 43 states now require CPR training before high school graduation. While states like California, Colorado, and Hawaii are still developing these trainings, some states like Massachusetts have invested $425,000 to expand CPR training in public schools.

Legislation can translate into lifesaving action. Studies have shown that patients in states with CPR training laws in schools have a 12% higher chance of receiving CPR from bystanders compared to patients in states without such laws.

By supporting local initiatives and collaborating with organizations like the American Medical Association and the Red Cross, national efforts to expand CPR training can be bolstered. For example, after the cardiac incident of football player Damar Hamlin, he became one of the main advocates for the HEARTS law, which was passed in 2024.
