Ed Sheeran, the British pop star, addressed the Israel-Palestine crisis during his concert in Philadelphia, describing the October 7, 2023 attack that resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people as "horrific."

Criticism of the War in Gaza

Ed Sheeran also deemed the recent war in Gaza, which claimed the lives of over 70,000 people, as "catastrophic and unjustifiable." He pointed to the systemic injustices in the occupied West Bank and stated that the Israeli government is expanding Jewish settlements, which the United Nations has described as a "clear violation of international law."

Difficult Decisions and Criticism

Sheeran acknowledged that he did not want to disappoint his fans and has never sought to become an activist musician. However, this has placed him in the midst of an important and exciting debate about freedom of expression and the most complex political issue. He said, "I have to make difficult decisions and I am making mistakes, and I am very sorry for that." These statements contradicted his previous position on Instagram, where he stated that his audience "does not expect a political discussion."

Sheeran's concerts faced controversy after Macklemore, one of his supporting artists, was dropped due to his comments about Palestine. Sheeran denied responsibility for this decision, stating that venues had threatened to cancel shows if Macklemore continued.

Macklemore announced on Instagram that billionaire Robert Kraft told Sheeran that the rapper was not allowed to perform at Gillette Stadium, which he owns. Several other artists also withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.

At the Sheeran concert, dozens of Palestine-supporting protesters gathered outside Lincoln Field in Philadelphia, holding Palestinian flags and chanting "Free, free Palestine." One protester, 18-year-old Brandon Atke, accused Sheeran of "complicity" with Kraft, saying, "I decided to go to the protest instead of the concert to shed light on the genocide in Gaza."

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) has called on Palestine supporters to boycott Sheeran's world tour.
