The Irish national team on Sunday defeated the Israeli team 3-0 in a politically charged match. This game took place while the Irish players bowed their heads during the playing of the Israeli national anthem and refrained from shaking hands with their opponents, an action that is customary in international competitions.

Political and social controversies surrounding the match

The Irish team played in this match wearing black armbands in memory of the victims of the Israeli military operations in Gaza. Just 24 hours before the match, the status of its holding was shrouded in uncertainty. On Saturday, players voted in favor of holding this match, which was technically a home game for Israel in Debrecen, Hungary, despite widespread opposition from public opinion in Ireland.

Diarmuid Corrigan, the CEO of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), announced at a press conference that was delayed due to lengthy discussions between players and coaches that a significant majority of players voted in favor of holding the match. He said: "Based on that, the federation decided to proceed with this game on behalf of Irish football, as we always intended to hold the competitions."

Team performance and final result

However, this voting was not entirely unanimous, and one player, backup goalkeeper Gavin Bazuno, decided to withdraw from the team for this match and another match against Israel in this tournament. In this game, Troy Parrott scored Ireland's first goal in the 14th minute, and Adam Idah scored the second two minutes later. Jack Moylan registered the third goal in the 25th minute, making the final score 3-0.

This match was held in a relatively empty stadium in Debrecen, with only a few hundred Israeli fans and a limited number of Irish supporters present. The Football Association of Ireland did not reserve any tickets for its fans, and Irish public broadcaster RTE aired the match without the usual analysis in the first half.

In recent days, the Irish team faced intense pressure from Irish fans and politicians to boycott this match. Ireland has long been a strong supporter of Palestinian rights and recognized a Palestinian state in 2024 alongside Spain and Norway. Dublin has also frequently criticized Israel for the conflicts in Gaza.

The Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people, leading to Israel's attack on Gaza, which resulted in over 73,000 deaths. Ireland's next Nations League match was originally scheduled to take place on October 4 in Dublin, but due to security concerns, it has been moved to the city of Bačka Topola in Serbia and is set to be held behind closed doors.
