James Talarico, in his speech at the Watcher Avenue Church in Houston, criticized his Republican opponent, Ken Paxton, and stressed the necessity of creating a wider coalition to win the election. In this speech, held on September 13, 2026, he pointed out that people need to vote for something, not against something.
Criticism of Paxton and Political Challenges
Talarico addressed the challenges of competing against Paxton in his speech. He noted that "even the most advanced artificial intelligence cannot uncover Ken Paxton's real scandals," criticizing him and emphasizing that the facts about Paxton are concerning enough. This comes as Paxton, the Attorney General of Texas, remains influential in the state's political scene, even after a grand jury indicted him and his colleagues in the Texas legislature impeached him.
Talarico's Strategy for Victory
Talarico knows well that to win this race, he must go beyond criticizing his opponent and build a broader coalition. In this regard, he is looking to attract voters from various segments of society. He said, "I want people to be excited about my views and values and know what we will do." Talarico also criticized the current situation and the lack of attention to people's problems, stating, "We are all under pressure. Whether you are a bit more conservative or a bit more progressive, we are all under pressure." This kind of approach could help him attract more voters.
While Talarico is working to gain support from Black voters, he has revisited some of his positions and introduced new policies regarding maternal healthcare and student loans. He has also emphasized that Democrats need to reclaim the principles of capitalism and return to a form of capitalism that cares about people.
However, Talarico's path to victory is not smooth, and he faces many challenges. Despite dominating the airwaves in recent months, his lead in most polls is within the margin of error, and his financial advantage has diminished. A Republican leadership-affiliated super PAC has spent over $100 million on ads supporting Paxton.
Talarico also faces challenges regarding support from Black voters and needs to increase his efforts in this area to achieve his goals.
