Mark Carney and Andy Burnham will meet for the first time in London on Wednesday. This meeting is seen as a return for Burnham to public duties following the death of his father on Monday. Downing Street's Office confirmed that this meeting will be an opportunity to connect through their joint support for Everton Football Club.

The meeting will begin with televised opening statements, after which reporters will attempt to analyze a report from the closed-door session. It is planned that the two leaders will head to the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool after these statements to watch the Everton vs. Wolverhampton match in the third round of the Carabao Cup at 19:45 British time.
At 61 years old, Carney is only five years older than Burnham. Both men held significant positions before entering the political arena. Carney served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada and was then appointed as the Governor of the Bank of England during the tumultuous Brexit period. He returned to Canada to succeed Justin Trudeau and improve the Liberal Party's standing.

Burnham, who was previously the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has recently returned to Westminster politics and is working to rescue the Labour Party from its critical state. Both leaders are currently at the forefront of centrist powers trying to navigate the world shaped by Donald Trump.
The Canadian government has announced that discussions will focus on "priorities for Canada-UK relations," which include defense, security, energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. Agreements are also being drafted for many of these topics. In light of Trump's tariffs on global allies last summer, Carney and the UK Prime Minister at the time agreed to establish a new strategic partnership between the two countries.
According to Veena Najibullah, co-founder and CEO of the New Canada Foreign Policy Center, there is a need to inject momentum into these efforts. She noted that since Burnham's new government came to power, "some progress" has been made. This includes the implementation of the CPTPP trade agreement between Canada and the UK in early September.
Najibullah states that the UK is particularly valuable due to its intersection with several Canadian priorities. "The next stage should relate to translating a broad strategic partnership into specific projects and achievements." She added that cooperation in defense and critical minerals "is considered to have the most immediate potential." Canada has vast reserves of critical minerals, including 11 of the 12 critical minerals for defense as defined by NATO.
The UK is working to secure its mineral supply against China's efforts to gather global resources, and Canada is developing plans to assist European partners in processing and storing minerals. Both countries, members of the Commonwealth and NATO, are currently collaborating on various defense projects.
Canada's presence as the first "observer" in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) with the UK, Italy, and Japan is an example of centrist powers' efforts to strengthen their cooperation. The Canadian government is seeking a platform to enhance its participation in this program and potentially apply for full membership.
