Carney's remarks came after Donald Trump, the President of the United States, threatened to impose "serious" tariffs on the union if Canada became a dependent member of the European Union.
Response to Trump's Threats
Carney told reporters, "This union is a positive trend. This is my response to the President of the United States." He added that "a stronger and more resilient Canada will be a more effective partner for the United States." These remarks signal Carney's strong determination to continue close cooperation with the European Union while also strengthening relations with the United States.

The Prime Minister of Canada referenced Trump's threat and emphasized that "Canadians are united and no one can tell us what language to speak." This was a reference to reports indicating that the White House had been trying to interfere with the French language spoken in Quebec. Carney continued, "No one can dictate our culture or tell us who we can make agreements with."
New Proposal from the European Union
The proposal by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to make Canada the first "dependent member" of the European Union surprised capitals and seemed to even catch Ottawa off guard. In his speech at the European Parliament, Carney referenced this term and thanked von der Leyen for "opening the door for Canada to become the first dependent member of the European Union," stating that he welcomes this ambition.
When reporters asked him whether he would prefer to call the new relationship between the EU and Canada "a union for the future" or "dependent membership," he simply brushed aside the distinction. Carney said, "President von der Leyen used both terms, union for the future and dependent membership. Naming is a matter for Europe; what terms they use." He added, "What matters is the content. What are we actually building together?"
