Protests with the slogan "Tinubu Must Go!" in Northern Nigeria have led to a severe crackdown on political opinions. This slogan refers to Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu, and is at the center of an increasing crackdown in the northern part of the country.
Arrest of Political Activists
Last month, police in Borno State arrested five men aged between 21 and 44 for wearing these t-shirts. Officials claimed that this group produced and wore these t-shirts with the intent to disturb public peace. The men were charged with conspiracy, incitement to riot, disturbing public peace, and rioting.
This action has been criticized by human rights groups and activists, and the police explained that the arrests were made after a routine patrol, and that drugs and other illegal items were found in the possession of these individuals. However, two weeks after this incident, police in Kano State blocked access to the site of a planned meeting by members of the same movement on the grounds of security concerns.
Emergence of Economic and Social Problems
These two incidents have raised questions about the thin line between legitimate security actions and the expression of opposing political opinions. Currently, Nigeria is facing one of its worst economic crises. Food prices have reached their highest level in over 20 years, and inflation and transportation costs are exacerbating the cost of living crisis.
In the northern part of the country, insecurity remains prevalent, especially in rural communities. For over a decade, the extremist group Boko Haram and its affiliates have continued an armed insurgency against the government, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions.
Isa Sanuchi, the Executive Director of Amnesty International in Nigeria, described the police actions against wearing "Tinubu Must Go!" t-shirts as indicative of a troubling pattern of repression of the right to freedom of assembly and expression. He emphasized that people should have the freedom to support or oppose a party or candidate, and it is unacceptable for wearing a t-shirt to lead to arrest and imprisonment.
