The administration of Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize this year. Trump emphasized in a conversation with reporters at the White House that he has "worked much harder" for peace than any other president in U.S. history.
Trump's Claim About His Role in Global Peace
Trump said, "I don't know what their decision will be. They have a reputation for possibly not awarding people like me." He also emphasized that not awarding him the prize would be "a great disrespect" to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. He added, "I have probably prevented the complete destruction of the world, because Iran will never have nuclear weapons, and that is a positive thing."

Trump also referred to indirectly receiving the Nobel Prize last year, stating that María Corina Machado, the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, said at her award ceremony that no one in history deserves this prize more than him. Machado presented her medal to Trump last January and urged the United States to support democracy in Venezuela.
Other Competitors for the Nobel Peace Prize
While Trump continues to assert his eligibility for the Nobel Peace Prize, other candidates are also being considered for this award. For example, the organization "Save Ukraine," which is active with the wife of Mykola Kuleba, its founder, is working to reunite Ukrainian children with their families. This organization has so far returned 1,763 children to their families.
Additionally, Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, has also emerged as a competitor for his efforts towards global peace. He has mentioned the wars and violence in the world in his statements and emphasized that peace can only be achieved through dialogue. He also has a 1 percent chance of receiving the prize.
Meanwhile, Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, who was appointed to his position last April, is being considered as another competitor for this award as he seeks to establish new trade relations with China and Europe to reduce dependence on the United States. Carney criticized American hegemony in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos and has been trying to maintain his popularity at home.
In total, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has registered 287 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, of which 208 are individuals and 79 are organizations. While Trump has been considered an unlikely candidate in polls, other nominees are also competing for this award.
