The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) is taking place in New York, and at this important event, some world leaders are absent for various reasons. Their absence from a major international stage like the United Nations has drawn significant attention.

Absence of Leaders and Reasons

The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, while in his second year of presidency and seeking to increase his presence on the international stage, has refrained from attending this meeting due to internal commitments related to state parliamentary elections. Merz is under increased pressure as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and for this reason, the German Foreign Minister, Johan Wadephol, will speak on his behalf.

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, despite having a stronger position than Merz, has announced that she cannot attend this week due to internal issues. Meloni returned to several international meetings after the NATO summit in early July and now needs to address various internal matters.

Absence of African and Asian Leaders

The President of South Africa has also refrained from attending the United Nations General Assembly due to health issues. According to medical officials, he needs rest and recovery. Instead, the South African Foreign Minister, Ronald Lamola, will speak on his behalf at this meeting.

In addition to South Africa, the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, are also absent from this session. El-Sisi will be represented by his Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, without providing a specific reason for his absence. The President of Nigeria is currently on vacation, and instead, the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, will represent the country.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, also rarely attends United Nations General Assembly meetings, having last been present in 2021. He will be represented by the Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. Additionally, the absence of the President of China, Xi Jinping, is also under scrutiny as he will travel to Washington instead of attending in New York.

Finally, Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority, who has extensive experience attending the United Nations General Assembly, cannot attend this meeting in person due to not receiving a visa from the United States government. He has planned to address the leaders present at this meeting via a video message.
