Background of the Conflicts in Yemen
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have controlled Sana'a and large parts of western and northern Yemen since 2014. During this time, Saudi Arabia has supported the Yemeni government based in Aden. Last summer, a years-long ceasefire in the Yemen war collapsed, and the Houthis advanced with aggressive attacks towards areas controlled by the Yemeni government.
In September, they managed to seize more areas along the Red Sea coast, including the port city of Al-Mokha and strategic islands in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Additionally, this group has targeted sites in Saudi Arabia, including oil facilities and military infrastructure, and has attacked Saudi ships in the Red Sea.
The United Nations has reported that since the escalation of the conflict, over 1,600 people have died and more than 300,000 have been displaced. On the same day, media supporting the Yemeni government reported that government forces successfully repelled a Houthi attack in the Al-Aqroud front in Taiz province.
Saudi-led coalition forces also announced that a Houthi missile fired towards Riyadh province in Saudi Arabia was intercepted. Additionally, on Friday, an airstrike on a market in southern Yemen resulted in at least 30 deaths, for which Houthi officials claimed responsibility.
