Anders Fernstedt, a homeless man from Sweden, has been living in front of an expensive house in Knightsbridge, London for over three years. This location is just a step away from Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park, attracting a lot of attention due to the gathering of curious tourists.
Life in a Grand Portico
This house, located at 2-8A Rutland Street, was sold in 2020 for £210 million (€244 million) to Hui Ka Yan, the founder of the Evergrande Group in China. Hui has never lived in this house, and the property is registered under his wife's name. Currently, with his assets frozen, this house is in a state of uncertainty.
Fernstedt, who has never entered this property, has made his home in the portico of this grand building. He lives in this place, which has 45 rooms and an indoor pool, and sleeps under the portico and a large umbrella. He remarked about his life: "I have never worried about having a bad night. In all four seasons, I am neither cold in winter nor hot in summer."
Relationship with the Local Community
Fernstedt has established friendly relations with local bakeries, cafes, and florists, receiving food, flowers, and electricity from them. He also uses a nearby homeless charity in Victoria for bathing and getting clothes. While some of his neighbors object to his presence, he tries to keep his home tidy and live peacefully.
Fernstedt said: "Many neighbors come up to me and ask what I want or need. My answer is: 'Just the normal time you gave me.'" He also noted that he feels secure in this wealthy neighborhood and that his presence prevents theft or vandalism in the house.
Despite the fact that life in London is difficult for the homeless, Fernstedt has somehow connected to this community and enjoys his life. He says: "I am no longer worried about losing everything. Because I have been here for a long time, my worries have faded away."
