Andris Kļaviņš, the Prime Minister of Latvia, achieved a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections of the country, strengthening his position to form a coalition government. His United List led the elections with about 35 percent of the votes and seems poised to secure 42 seats out of 100 in the National Parliament.
Decisive victory and challenges ahead
With nearly all votes counted after Saturday's elections, the United List, which leans center-right, is ahead of the far-right party "Latvia First" led by Ainārs Šlesers by more than 20 percent. Šlesers opposes restrictive tariffs on Russia and has criticized government policies in recent years.
Initial results announced on Sunday indicate that Kļaviņš will need to negotiate with other parties to form a majority government. His two partners in the previous coalition, the "National Alliance" and "New Unity," have managed to surpass the 5 percent vote threshold and return to parliament. These two parties seem likely to have enough seats to create a majority without needing Šlesers's party.
Economic and political implications
Kļaviņš's victory, who was appointed Prime Minister in May, comes at a time when Latvia's economy faces many challenges. High inflation and economic issues stemming from global crises, including the critical situation of the airline "airBaltic" and forced migrations from Russia and Belarus, were among the factors influencing this election.
During his election campaign in Brussels, Kļaviņš also opposed an agreement to remove Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the EU sanctions list. However, Latvia ultimately abstained from this decision, allowing the regime of broader sanctions to be extended following an agreement among EU countries.
With this victory, Kļaviņš is now in a favorable position to form a new pro-Ukraine coalition, which could help continue Latvia's supportive policies for Ukraine against Russian aggression. This election clearly reflects the Latvian people's desire to continue supporting Ukraine and striving for stability within the country.
