Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester and the new leader of the Labour Party, introduced the policies of the Green Party as part of his agenda in his recent speech at the Labour Party conference. This move comes as the Green Party, led by Zach Polanski, seeks to position itself as an alternative to the Labour Party on the left of British politics.
Decline in Support for the Green Party
In the past six months, the Green Party had managed to gain 18% support from voters, but this figure has now dropped to 11%. Burnham is trying to attract Green voters by focusing on leftist issues such as electoral reform and creating a new social care system. Experts say this approach could weaken the electoral chances of the Greens.

Challenges for the Green Party
Polanski told members at his party conference that support for the Green Party has pressured the Labour Party to move towards leftist policies. However, experts warn that actions like those taken by Burnham could undermine the electoral chances of the Green Party. Luke Tryl, director of the think tank “More in Common,” compared the situation of the Green Party to that of the UK Independence Party, which, despite its significant impact on politics, never managed to enter Parliament.
While the Green Party seeks to maintain its distinct policies from the Labour Party, Polanski has also unveiled policies like an “emergency brake” on private rents aimed at preventing rent increases above 2%. This comes as Burnham had supported rent controls in his government but has now rejected this issue.
The Green Party also emphasized the need for more regulations for landlords at its conference and passed policies to eliminate the budget responsibility office and financial regulations that they claim restrict public spending. Additionally, the party reiterated its positions on environmental issues and climate change, which were among the main reasons for its founding.
The Future of the Green Party
Polanski also promised that the Green Party would adhere to its commitments to reduce greenhouse gases by 2040, although some members have stated that these promises need to be reviewed. While Burnham made no mention of environmental issues in his speech, Green Party members believe they should focus on short-term challenges such as the cost of living and improving healthcare services.
Given these developments, it remains to be seen whether the Green Party can maintain its previous support or continue to see a decline in popularity.
