Artaf Sheikh, a 42-year-old filmmaker whose works examine the conflicts in his homeland, Kashmir, was arrested on September 24, 2023, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials at Washington Dulles International Airport after arriving from a California flight. His family and friends have described the arrest as illegal and are calling for his release.

Details of the Arrest

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Sheikh entered the United States legally but has been unlawfully residing in the country since his admission. Sheikh came to the U.S. in 2019 on a student visa and enrolled in a graduate program in film studies at Georgia State University.

He applied for asylum in 2020, and according to his family, his immigration application is under review, and he has been authorized to work and live in the United States. DHS also stated that while Sheikh will receive due process, the existence of a pending application does not mean he has legal residency status.

Background and Artistic Works

Sheikh, who hails from Indian-administered Kashmir, won the Emerging Filmmaker Award at the TINAC International Film Festival in 2025. His debut feature film, "Saffron Kingdom," which premiered in 2024, won Best Feature at various festivals, including the Chicago Film Festival, Los Angeles Film and Documentary Awards, and the Melbourne Film Festival.

This film explores the conflicts in Kashmir, a region with a Muslim majority claimed by both India and Pakistan, each controlling only part of it, and has seen wars fought over it.

The U.S. government, especially during Donald Trump's presidency, has sought to tighten immigration laws and deport unauthorized individuals. This summer, the number of arrests by ICE reached record highs, with around 51,000 cases recorded in August. Critics have labeled these actions as violations of legal rights and freedom of expression, creating an unsafe environment, particularly for ethnic minorities.
