Bart De Wever, the Prime Minister of Belgium, is going to meet with King Philippe on Monday to present his resignation. This action comes after the failure of budget negotiations, which have stalled due to efforts to fill a €10 billion deficit.
Failure in Budget Negotiations
In the latest attempts to reach an agreement on next year's budget, senior officials from De Wever's five-party government gathered over the past weekend, but separated on Monday morning without a deal. Tuesday was seen as an unofficial deadline to finalize the agreement, as the budget must pass through parliament before the end of the year.

Concerns about the Budget Deficit
During the negotiations, De Wever wanted to show financial markets that Belgium is on track to meet its obligations at the European level. Belgium is projected to have a 5.2% deficit of GDP in 2025, which is expected to increase next year. De Wever had previously rejected starting the new year with a temporary budget, which would allow the government to continue with the same budget as last year.
Budget negotiations have continued in recent weeks, with tensions primarily arising between the Flemish Socialists and the Francophone Reform Movement. The Socialists called for an increase in taxes on high incomes, while the Reform Movement rejected this request and opposed broader reforms in value-added tax.
David Clarinval, the Deputy Prime Minister from the Reform Movement, told reporters that there are still "very many taxes on the table." He did not rule out the possibility of resuming negotiations on Monday.
Possible Political Consequences
Last year, Belgium's budget negotiations also required more time, and De Wever had set a specific deadline after meeting with King Philippe. If Belgium moves towards early elections, the country may lean towards extremist parties, as both the far-right party "Vlaams Belang" and the leftist "Workers' Party" have performed well in polls.
Given the current circumstances, Belgium faces serious challenges, and the outcome of the budget negotiations could have profound implications for the political and economic stability of the country.
