Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga champion, will travel to Nairobi, Kenya during the winter break to hold a friendly match against Ajax Amsterdam. This game is part of the country's preparations for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, which will take place next summer in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Growth of Football in Africa

Rouwen Kasper, a member of Bayern Munich's board in marketing and sales, stated: "Bayern has millions of amazing fans in Africa, and we feel a close connection with them. This continent has a lot of passion for football." He also added that the club will help promote the Bundesliga and looks forward to this special event.

Development of Sports Infrastructure in Kenya

While football is rapidly advancing in Africa, investment in sports on the continent is increasing. Recently, Formula 1 announced its return to Africa, and Nairobi will also host the World Athletics Championships in 2029. Simon Chadwick, a program director at the African School of Economics, believes that various countries, including Kenya, are increasingly using sports as a tool for politics and development.

He also said: "We are witnessing a kind of professionalization and industrialization in sports that is naturally taking shape in Africa. Kenya and other African countries are now paying more attention to self-sufficiency in this area."

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite these advancements, the government of William Ruto, the President of Kenya, faces significant criticism regarding taxation, unemployment, and management of discontent. The cost of constructing the new stadium is estimated at around 375 million euros ($418 million). The prevalence of criticism regarding investment in sports infrastructure comes as people seek solutions to other issues such as education and healthcare.

Wanjohi, a research officer at the African Sports and Creative Institute, stated: "This event could be used as a tool for the government's election campaigns ahead of the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, some people are concerned about whether this investment serves the public interest or not." However, many sports fans in Kenya are optimistic about the future of football in their country.
