Berlin has announced its decision to withdraw from hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This decision was made after the Left Party's victory in the local elections on Sunday. Elif Eralp, the party's main candidate and a potential future mayor, has stated that she does not support Berlin's hosting bid.
Consequences of Withdrawal
Berlin's withdrawal means that only Munich and the Rhine/Ruhr region are still in the running to host these events. The city of Hamburg also withdrew from the competition in May after failing to gain sufficient support in a referendum. Kai Wegner, the current mayor of Berlin from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), expressed disappointment, stating: "Today is a sad day for Berlin, as the Olympic and Paralympic Games could have been a great opportunity for us."

Wegner also added: "When Ms. Eralp announced that this bid was effectively shelved, the top sports associations clearly stated: under such circumstances, we cannot declare our support." Kaveh Niroomand, the volleyball team manager who led Berlin's bid, said: "We simply could not provide the political stability needed."
On Saturday, the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) is set to select a region as the preferred option for hosting the Summer Olympic Games in 2036, 2040, and 2044. The Olympics have been held in Germany twice in the past; Berlin hosted in 1936 and Munich in 1972.
