Berlin will monitor the security of this area starting in November by installing 30 AI cameras in Kottbusser Tor. These cameras will operate 24/7 and will be capable of automatically identifying dangerous and potential situations. After a trial period, it is expected that this system will officially be put into operation in early December.

Reasons for Implementing the Plan

Kottbusser Tor has been recognized as one of the seven high-risk areas in Berlin. Iris Spranger, Berlin's interior senator, announced that over the past 12 months, more than 900 crimes have been recorded in this area, including over 300 physical assaults. Spranger stated that the goal of this plan is to identify threats early and provide greater security for citizens.

Functionality of the Surveillance System

The AI video surveillance is designed to identify suspicious movements. This system analyzes videos based on movement patterns to identify dangerous behaviors such as hitting or people falling. If an unusual situation is detected, the system will automatically issue an alert.

The analyses conducted by the system are displayed as "stick figures," but when an alert is triggered, police officers will see a clear and precise image of the situation. This allows them to make more informed decisions.

Storage Duration and Data Security

The recorded images will be stored for 28 days and can be used as evidence in court if a crime occurs. The Berlin police have emphasized that this information will only be accessible to government entities, and the images will be stored and encrypted in a Berlin police data center.

However, there are concerns about the accuracy of this system's performance. In Hamburg, 99 percent of the situations identified by this system have been classified as false alarms. But the Berlin police hope to achieve better results by choosing a different system.

Political Future of the Plan

The future of this project may be influenced by political changes in Berlin. With the possibility of a new government formed by a left-green coalition, video surveillance may become a controversial topic. In response to questions about the potential cancellation of this plan if the coalition changes, Spranger emphasized that security in Berlin must be ensured.

Ultimately, coalition agreements will include a reassessment of the video surveillance system, and this issue will be discussed in future negotiations. Spranger also announced that the development plans for this system will extend beyond Kottbusser Tor and will include other sensitive areas such as Warschauer Bridge, Alexanderplatz, and Görlitzer Park.
