Saudi Arabia is receiving help from a key Western ally in its fight against Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen. Britain is providing military support to this country to help restore stability in the region and reduce pressures on global energy supply.

British Military Support

British Defense Minister, Luke Pollard, stated in an interview: "We are working with our friends to try to reduce tensions." The deployment of "defensive equipment" to Saudi Arabia aims to "ensure that there is no further escalation in the Red Sea," which could harm fuel prices.

This international assistance comes after weeks of conflict between the Saudi-backed government in Yemen and the Houthis, which has violated a four-year informal ceasefire. Houthi rebels have made significant advances along the Red Sea coast and are attempting to control the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital maritime point connecting Asia and Europe through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

Impact on British National Security

Pollard explained that "a large portion of our trade, both in goods and energy, passes through this region. Therefore, what happens in this part of the Middle East is vital for our national and economic security." These remarks clearly reflect the reason behind Britain's response to Saudi Arabia's request for help.

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of Britain, told reporters during a trip to New York that the pressures of the cost of living in his country are also one of the key reasons for supporting Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that this is a time-limited agreement regarding assistance but will be continuously reviewed.

Britain's support for Saudi Arabia is Burnham's first military deployment since taking office in July. However, this is not the first time Britain has assisted Saudi Arabia, as the two countries have a close military alliance.

Aerial Support and Improvement of Military Operations

The British Ministry of Defense confirmed on Tuesday that it has agreed to provide "an RAF Voyager refueling aircraft to support Saudi defensive activities in the region." According to the Royal Air Force (RAF), a Voyager allows fighter jets and other aircraft to refuel while in flight.

Andreas Krick, a senior lecturer in defense studies at King's College London, stated that this aircraft "generally allows the Saudi Air Force to stay in the skies over Yemen longer without having to return to base." He added: "This increases operational speed regarding targeted strikes and flexibility in responding to changing ground conditions."

According to Pollard, this aircraft will operate from the RAF base in Cyprus, which was targeted earlier this year, and will support the Typhoon fighters used by Saudi Arabia. "This will assist them in their defensive actions against the Houthis, who have attacked not only the capital of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh but also the Republic of Yemen."

Historically, Britain has played the role of "guarantor of maritime navigation freedom worldwide," and Krick described these recent British efforts to reduce tensions in the Red Sea as an example of "this government's action."

He also added: "We are not only helping a partner in the region, but we are also helping ourselves, as the control of Bab al-Mandab by the Houthis is something Britain cannot tolerate." This move reflects a small success for Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries in strengthening their bilateral security relations beyond traditional dependence on the United States.
