In an unprecedented project, scientists are trying to discover whether the future climate of Alaska and its ecosystems can respond to climate change. On the northern slopes of Alaska, a group of researchers cautiously walks on tussock grass and heads towards a rushing stream that flows from the massive snow and ice of the Brooks Range.
Searching for life in the tundra
Near the Galbraith stream, they set up a mist net to capture white-crowned sparrows. These birds have recently arrived from southern regions to feed on the insects that will soon descend on the tundra like a storm cloud. The Arctic summer is very short, and the birds have only a few weeks to establish their territories, find mates, lay eggs, and raise their chicks on a diet rich in insects.
By collecting blood, feather, and fecal samples from each bird that is captured, scientists are investigating what the birds eat and how this diet changes throughout the summer.
