Cardinal Michael Czerny, who has been appointed as the head of the Artificial Intelligence Commission at the Vatican, stated in an interview that he does not use artificial intelligence in his work. These remarks were made four months after his appointment to this position, which involves the church's engagement with the AI revolution.
No Use of Artificial Intelligence Despite New Responsibility
Czerny responded to the question of whether he utilizes artificial intelligence in his work during a conversation with Anna McElvoy on the "Brussels Playbook Week Ender" podcast. He said, "No, not yet. I really haven't had the time." This comes as he has recently been appointed and his responsibilities include examining the impact of machine learning on humanity.

Willingness to Learn and Collaborate
Czerny also stated in response to whether he opposes this technology for principled reasons, "I am ready and happy to learn. I feel it is my moral duty to use it to gain personal experience, and I hope this will help me in my work." He emphasized the necessity of dialogue between church officials and European governments regarding people's concerns about the dangers of advanced AI models.
Czerny stressed, "There needs to be a dialogue between bishops and European governments to express people's concerns about how to manage this technology with transparency and creativity. Otherwise, we might say in five months or five years that we felt a disaster was on the way, but we couldn't do anything about it."
The Catholic Church is strengthening its participation in recent discussions about the future of artificial intelligence. Paolo Benanti, a Vatican advisor on artificial intelligence, participated last week in a meeting with technology leaders invited by King Charles III in Scotland to discuss the opportunities and risks associated with this technology.
