Carsten Breuer, the Chief of Defense of Germany, has been appointed as the Chairman of NATO's Military Committee. He has been commanding the German armed forces since 2023 and gained the support of 17 defense chiefs from 32 NATO member countries in a secret ballot on Saturday to take this position in Copenhagen.

Congratulations to Carsten Breuer

Giuseppe Cavodragone, the current committee chairman, congratulated Carsten Breuer in a message on social media platform X, stating: "Your practical judgment, your deep familiarity with this alliance, and your leadership of the German armed forces will benefit NATO." Breuer will take over this position from Cavodragone in July 2024 and will serve for three years.

Voting and Its Results

The remaining votes from the ballot were kept secret to prevent disloyalty and divisions over the outcome. Breuer was able to defeat Janine Carignan, the Chief of Defense of Canada, in this competition. She was seen as a popular option, given Berlin's status as the largest defense spender in Europe and implicit support from Washington. Breuer emphasized Germany's leading role in defense spending during his campaign, especially as European allies are under pressure from the U.S. to control their defense.

Carignan, who will assume command of the Canadian Armed Forces in 2024, had proposed an approach to strengthen the role of the Military Committee and demonstrate enduring unity within NATO. The strained bilateral relations between Canada and the United States led NATO officials to believe that this issue complicated Carignan's position in the competition.

The result of this vote reflects Berlin's growing role in NATO, as Germany has attained senior military positions and is taking on more operational responsibilities for the protection of frontline countries. The country is particularly focused on regional military command centered on Estonia and Latvia and permanent deployments in Lithuania.

Expectations from the NATO Military Committee Chairman

The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee is expected to provide honest military advice to allies and assist in assessing capabilities, funding, and feasibility of operations. He oversees dozens of working groups of NATO military personnel and engages in agreements on the formation of military advice.
