Drug development has always been a major challenge. According to statistics, nearly 9 out of 10 treatments that enter human trials fail. However, now artificial intelligence (AI) has come to assist researchers in changing this trend.

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Medical Discoveries

In the past, researchers started with hypotheses about biology and searched for molecules that might affect it. This process often led to failure. However, with the advent of artificial intelligence, we can witness significant changes in this area. This technology helps researchers test new ideas more quickly and analyze results faster.

Recent Successes in Drug Development

Recently, a team of researchers has been able to design antibodies from scratch using artificial intelligence that are capable of targeting one of the toughest challenges in medicine. In another example, a group of five scientists used an AI-based experimental system to achieve results in cancer treatment from an idea for a new drug in less than six months. These achievements demonstrate that artificial intelligence can help accelerate the drug discovery and development process.

Last month, Merck and Moderna reported that a personalized vaccine for melanoma significantly delayed the progression of this disease. These results are astonishing on their own, and studies in other areas are also underway. Combining clinical evidence with artificial intelligence tools and automated laboratories can help bring more competitors into this field.

However, it should be noted that the claim that artificial intelligence has solved all the problems of drug development is incorrect. Of the 117 AI-based drug programs that were in human trials last year, none were approved. Biology still poses challenges against generations of outstanding scientists, and artificial intelligence cannot change this reality.

But we are seeing positive signs. Artificial intelligence is providing better methods for identifying therapeutic pathways. This technology can help us identify new ideas, thereby increasing the chances of success in treating diseases.

Our children will face the challenges and changes that are currently being discussed. They must have leaders who take these risks seriously and institutions that are ready to act before fully understanding the consequences, especially in healthcare. They also deserve to know that in this era, diseases that we could not understand are now revealing their secrets.
