China is negotiating with Moscow and Washington to hold a trilateral meeting between Xi Jinping, the President of China, Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, and Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia. A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced this news on Wednesday.
Meeting at the APEC Summit
The trilateral meeting is set to take place on the sidelines of the APEC summit, which will be held on November 18 and 19 in Shenzhen, China. According to the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, the country is in communication with relevant parties to facilitate the trilateral meeting between the three leaders.

Concerns about discussion topics
Mao Ning did not provide details about the topics that may be raised during this meeting at her press conference. While there are concerns in Europe that discussions about ending the war in Ukraine may occur without the presence of Kyiv or European capitals. Trump stated last month that he is interested in discussing "denuclearization" in a trilateral meeting, but has paid less attention to Ukraine.
China has not yet commented on possible topics for this meeting, although German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that Xi Jinping rejected the idea of discussing Ukraine in their recent talks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also stated that holding such a meeting would be "appropriate and very useful," but did not provide details on its agenda.
Concerns from Ukraine and Europe's role
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern about the possibility of this trilateral meeting, stating: "I really do not want this meeting to turn into a 'Yalta - 2, 3, 4' where influence is distributed." This refers to the 1945 negotiations between the leaders of the United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union regarding the future of Germany after World War II.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, alongside Zelensky in Berlin, said: "Europe must and wants to play a role in this process. The key elements of a peaceful solution — whether in terms of sanctions or security architecture — can only be resolved by us Europeans. And all parties involved are well aware of this."
