Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, who has been in office since 2015, is facing a serious challenge from Gina Hinojosa, a Democratic representative, ahead of the November election. Recent polls show that Abbott, who has kept Texas under Republican control for over 30 years, is now in a close race.

Current Election Status

Abbott won the last election by more than 10 percent, but now most polls indicate a narrow margin in votes. For example, in a poll conducted between September 24 and 28, Abbott was leading by about 5 percent over Hinojosa. In contrast, another poll showed that 49 percent of Texas voters would vote for Hinojosa, while 46 percent chose Abbott.

Factors Influencing the Competition

Experts say that the unusual competition in the Texas gubernatorial election is linked to voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump and the national Republican Party. Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University, says, "Polls indicate that this year is difficult for Republicans nationally, especially in states like Texas where Trump's unpopularity has affected candidates." Polls show that only 31 percent of adults nationwide give Trump a positive rating, and this number drops to 26 percent on economic issues.

Although support for Trump is higher in Texas, with about 42 percent of respondents having a positive view of him, 51 percent have a negative view. Texas voters' concerns revolve mainly around the cost of living and how Trump is managing the economy. The state is facing rising gas prices due to the war in Iran, which directly impacts people's lives.

If Hinojosa can win this election, it will be the first time since 1990 that a Democrat achieves the governorship of Texas. This change could have a significant impact on state policies. Hinojosa has stated that if she wins, she will use her veto power to prevent partisan gerrymandering efforts.

Jones also notes that Hinojosa's chances of winning against Abbott are low, as her voting record and policies lean more to the left and do not align with the views of the majority of Texas voters. According to him, if Abbott can convince Republican voters to vote based on party and policy, his chances of success will increase.
