Dayanita Singh, a prominent Indian photographer, recently showcased her works in an exhibition at the State Archive of Venice and will hold two new solo exhibitions in the cities of Rome and Turin this fall.

Innovative Approaches in Photography

With nearly 40 years of experience, Dayanita Singh has created images that depict life. She is known for her candid photographs of local vendors, strangers, and acquaintances. In an interview in 2022, Singh likened her medium-format camera, which she uses horizontally, to a "third breast" and stated that she prefers to photograph from waist level towards her subjects, rather than standing still and shooting from eye level.

Presenting Works in Mobile Museums

Singh has also been innovative in presenting and distributing her works. She often displays her photographs in "mobile museums"; foldable wooden structures that are portable or on cubic towers that can be continuously reconfigured. This approach allows her to go beyond traditional art market methods and create more affordable photography books and collections, in addition to selling limited editions at high prices through galleries.

At the Venice exhibition, Singh's works garnered significant attention and were recognized as a newsworthy event. These exhibitions not only help present her works but also create a space for dialogue about contemporary Indian art and culture.

Given Singh's future plans, the upcoming exhibitions in Rome and Turin are expected to be equally impactful. These exhibitions will not only help introduce her works to new audiences but also provide an opportunity for a deeper exploration of photography methods and contemporary Indian art.
