Democrats achieved a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections. In this election, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats were voted on. Before election night, Republicans held the majority in both chambers, albeit by a narrow margin.
Senate Election Results
In the Senate, Democrats were able to gain several Republican seats and won in areas where Republicans were strong, such as North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, Texas, and Iowa. With this success, Democrats crossed the majority line of 51 seats and took control of this chamber.

House of Representatives Election Results
In the House of Representatives, Democrats reached the threshold of 218 seats needed for a majority. This means they have gained control of both chambers of Congress. Surveys conducted show that Republican support among various demographic groups has decreased compared to previous elections. For example, 55 percent of white men voted for Republicans, while 92 percent of black women voted for Democrats.
Economic Impacts on Election Results
One of the significant factors in this election has been the economic situation. Prices have risen significantly, and nearly half of Americans reported that their family's financial situation has worsened compared to two years ago. This sentiment was also different among those who are better off; 75 percent of them voted for Republicans, while only 24 percent voted for Democrats.
On key issues, voters were divided along party lines. Those who considered immigration the most important issue voted 89 percent for Republicans. Meanwhile, 78 percent of those who viewed the state of democracy as the most important issue voted for Democrats.
Ultimately, given the significant changes in U.S. policies, the results of this election could have profound impacts on the country's political future. Considering the dissatisfaction with Congress's performance, reaching agreements for passing laws and budgets in the coming years will become a major challenge.
