Soil Moisture Deficit (SMD) refers to the amount of moisture that the soil needs to supply to reach its full capacity. When the land is fully saturated after heavy rainfall, it is referred to as its agricultural capacity. However, under current conditions, many soils in England are experiencing severe drought, which is recognized as one of the greatest environmental challenges.

In southern England, SMD typically hovers around zero in winter, but in summer this figure rises to 100 millimeters and in dry years may even exceed 150 millimeters. The critical drought point is where the soil has no water available for plants and is known as the Permanent Wilting Point (PWP).
