Elon Musk, the technology billionaire and financial supporter of Republicans, was one of the biggest losers on the night of the U.S. midterm elections. He is recognized as a major supporter for candidates he backed, having spent over $446 million on those who ultimately lost.

Heavy Spending and Disappointing Results

Musk, known as one of the largest financial backers in election history, allocated about $200 million of this amount to efforts related to Texas. The candidates he supported faced significant defeats nationwide, including Ken Paxton in the Senate race and Vick Ramaswamy in the Ohio gubernatorial election.

The surprising victory of Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic candidate, in the Texas gubernatorial election has posed serious challenges to Musk's plans for building data centers in the state. This victory has jeopardized Musk's expectations for creating a conducive environment for advanced technologies in Texas.

Changes in Technology Policies

After seeing the election results, Musk wrote in a post on social media platform X: "Data centers in space now look very appealing." He also jokingly referred to the issue of election interference, stating: "It seems my space lasers didn’t work for election interference this time."

Texas has been recognized as an important hub for building data centers in recent years, with Governor Greg Abbott acting as a strong supporter for technology leaders and Wall Street. However, Sam Kaplan, publisher of Hunterbrook Media, stated that the recent election results have significantly changed this situation.

He said: "Amid criticism of data centers across the country, Texas was supposed to be recognized as a paradise for AI, where people could build data centers regardless of the state of the rest of America. This election completely changed that situation."

Following this election, with Democrats controlling the U.S. Congress, Musk may become a target for a party looking to criticize tech executives. Some Democrats are pushing to summon tech executives to Congress.

Greg Casar, the Democratic representative from Texas, stated: "Voters rejected Republicans for being influenced by AI billionaires. Democrats should hold them accountable instead of accepting their checks."
