Elon Musk, CEO and largest shareholder of SpaceX and Tesla, publicly announced the possibility of merging the two companies. In a conference call with SpaceX investors, he stated that the two companies have formed special committees at the request of shareholders to explore this idea.
Benefits of Merging Two Tech Giants
Musk said: "I think merging these companies makes a lot of sense because we are almost on the brink of a superintelligence singularity, and collaboration could provide us with many advantages." He added that the decision depends on the special committees of both companies. These committees, which include independent directors, must agree on the terms of any deal and then present it to shareholders for a vote. Musk cannot participate in their discussions due to a conflict of interest.

Challenges and Opportunities
Musk had previously hinted at the possibility of a merger between Tesla and SpaceX. Barclays analysts have suggested that this merger could be announced before Tesla's annual shareholder meeting in December. Merging these two companies could create a company valued at around $3.5 trillion, placing it among the most valuable companies in the world.
However, some analysts have warned about legal and political hurdles, especially concerning Tesla's operations in China and SpaceX's defense work in the United States. Morningstar analysts also pointed out that the merger could raise U.S. national security concerns. Additionally, any agreement may face congressional scrutiny, which could intensify if Democrats win the midterm elections.
The merger could bring two of Musk's largest businesses under one corporate roof and facilitate the transfer of investments and resources between projects. This merger could help Tesla leverage SpaceX's artificial intelligence technologies and also allow both companies to manage their resources more effectively.
This merger could also strengthen Musk's control over Tesla's direction. Barclays estimates that a SpaceX acquisition of Tesla could give Musk about 37% of the combined company's shares while he would control 56% of the voting power.
