Eurozone countries are required to introduce their candidates for succeeding Christine Lagarde, the current president of the European Central Bank, by November 6. This announcement follows a statement from the spokesperson of the Eurogroup, which is the informal gathering of finance ministers from Eurozone countries.
Succession Selection Process
The statement said: "The Council of the European Union has initiated the selection process for a successor to the president of the European Central Bank. Therefore, the president of the Eurogroup, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has asked member countries to submit their candidates by Friday, November 6, 2026." This deadline allows Eurozone countries the opportunity to present their candidates for this sensitive position.
Christine Lagarde announced last week that she will resign from her position by February 7, 2027. Her decision marks the beginning of changes at the helm of the European Central Bank based in Frankfurt. Lagarde is recognized as one of the key figures in Europe's economic policies, and her departure could have significant implications for the Eurozone.
Potential Candidates and Final Decision
At the upcoming Eurogroup gathering on November 9, Eurozone finance ministers will discuss the candidates and the process for filling all three vacant positions on the executive board of the European Central Bank. Among them, the two main contenders for Lagarde's succession are Pablo Hernández de Cos from Spain and Klaas Knot from the Netherlands. These two have been put forward as strong options for the position.
However, the final decision regarding the selection of the president of the European Central Bank will rest with the European Council, where heads of state and government will participate. Therefore, this selection depends not only on the views of finance ministers but also on agreements among the heads of countries. This issue could impact the future financial and economic policies of Europe.
