Iran and the United States will soon travel to New York to participate in the world's largest diplomatic gathering. This meeting could be seen as a key moment for determining the course of the war in Iran after nearly seven months.

Increasing Tensions Before the Meeting

Tensions between the two countries have escalated ahead of the UN General Assembly. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened in an interview that he might destroy the entire nation of Iran and warned Iran that "it better behave." Trump also referred to his options, stating: "Destroying Iran, allowing them to collapse economically, or making a deal" are among his options.

On the other side, Hossein Mohibi, spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran, responded to these threats, stating that if the United States attacks Iran, Tehran will use "new weapons and capabilities." He stated: "If a new attack occurs, we will definitely change the weapons and geography of the war."

Diplomatic Opportunities at UNGA

The UN General Assembly, where representatives from Iran, the United States, and key Gulf countries will be present, could be a vital opportunity to reduce tensions and attempt to revive peace negotiations. Experts say this week in New York could be the last chance to prevent an escalation of tensions.

Ali Vaez, Deputy Director for Middle East and North Africa at the International Crisis Group, said: "This week in New York presents an opportunity, especially for countries acting as mediators, to prevent a repeat of tensions and ensure it does not spiral out of control this time."

At this gathering, senior officials from the United States and Iran, including Trump, Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, and Mike Wallace, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, as well as Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran, and Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of Iran, will be present. Trump and Pezeshkian are expected to speak at this meeting.

Efforts to revive negotiations between the two countries heavily depend on the mediation of Gulf countries. Trump is expected to meet with leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council on the sidelines of this gathering. This meeting will likely include discussions about the next steps in the war with Iran.

According to experts, this week could be an opportunity for Gulf countries to play an active role in mediating between Iran and the United States, given the need for an acceptable formula for both sides. Currently, both sides are in a "zero-sum" position, with no overlap between Iran's demands and U.S. objectives.

Experts also believe that to reach an agreement, both sides need some kind of "incentive," which may take the form of a revision of a previous memorandum of understanding.

Ultimately, another outcome that may arise from this UN General Assembly could be the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution regarding the Iran conflict. This resolution could legally bind both parties and set specific conditions in the war.

This week at the UN General Assembly presents an important opportunity for regional countries and Iran to try to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.
