Krista Gail Pike, a 50-year-old woman who was convicted of murdering a classmate over 30 years ago, was suspended from execution by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. This decision was made after officials failed to carry out her execution on Wednesday and observed her breathing.
Details of the Execution Incident
Pike's execution was scheduled for 11 a.m. local time at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. During the procedure, two doses of lethal drugs were administered to her, but instead of dying, she was clearly gasping for breath. Her lawyers stated that after this unsuccessful attempt, Pike was transferred to a hospital.

This situation raised concerns among Pike's lawyers, who requested that her execution be halted due to "unnecessary suffering." They argued that this action violates her right to an execution that is not cruel and unusual. Pike, who was 18 years old at the time of the crime, had previously stated in a statement that she was a "mentally ill child" and it took her years to understand the seriousness of her actions.
Legal Consequences and Further Investigations
Bill Lee stated in a statement that he has ordered a comprehensive and independent review to determine what happened. He also added that no executions will take place this year. Lee said, "The enforcement of the law is one of the state's most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be carried out in a manner that is not only legal and consistent with fundamental principles but also effective."
This is the second time this year that an execution in Tennessee has failed. In May, the execution of Tony Caruana also failed due to similar issues. If Pike had been executed, she would have been the first woman to be executed in the state of Tennessee in over 200 years.
Media witnesses, who observed from a separate room, reported that Pike was strapped to a hospital bed and in her last words said, "I am leaving this world the same way I have spent most of my life, and that is in love." After two doses of the drug were administered, her gasping could be heard from behind the closed curtain until at 8:53 p.m. the microphone was turned off and the media was asked to leave the room.
