Federal agents officially searched the home of Ilhan Omar, a Democratic representative and fierce critic of Donald Trump, on Monday. The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) confirmed this action and stated that the search was conducted under a judicial warrant.

Details of the Search and Ongoing Investigations

Agents from the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), responsible for enforcing immigration laws in the U.S., were seen outside Ilhan Omar's residence in Washington on Monday morning. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice stated in a press release: "Today in the Washington area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicial warrant obtained by the Department of Justice." This official added that this action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.

Ilhan Omar, who came to the United States from Somalia as a child, was elected to Congress in 2018 and is a member of a group of left-wing Democratic representatives known as "The Squad," who are among Trump’s fiercest critics. Omar represents a district that includes Minneapolis, home to one of the largest Somali communities in the United States.

Background of Tensions Between Omar and Trump

The Trump administration has repeatedly attacked the Somali community, and Trump has often referred to this community in derogatory terms. He previously called Somalis "garbage" and stated last February that Omar and Rashida Tlaib, a Democratic representative from Michigan, should be "sent back to where they came from" and "sent to mental institutions."

Last week, Trump also described Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the Michigan Senate, as a "radical extremist" and a "terrorist supporter," while endorsing Republican candidate Mike Rogers. Omar has described these attacks as "an unhealthy and frightening obsession" and stated that she and her family have faced death threats. She attributes these threats to "hateful political rhetoric," particularly from Trump.

Currently, no charges have been announced against Ilhan Omar in connection with Monday's search, but U.S. media reports indicate that this operation is related to investigations into potential fraud concerning immigration documents that were filed on behalf of her late father during her childhood. Omar has not yet commented on this search.

This search comes just three weeks before the midterm elections, in which Republicans led by Trump will attempt to maintain their slim majority in Congress.
