Financial empowerment refers to a set of knowledge, skills, tools, and opportunities that enable individuals to take control of their financial lives and gradually improve their financial situation. In Britain, with advancements in digital technology, people are increasingly using online tools to manage their money, but confidence in using these tools tells the real story of financial empowerment in this country.

Generational Differences in Financial Confidence

According to a report by the Leeds Banking Group, over 75 percent of young people aged 18 to 24 in Britain used artificial intelligence (AI) for personal financial management in the past year, the highest rate among generations. However, this age group has the lowest level of confidence in using these tools, with only 64 percent feeling assured. In contrast, this percentage rises to 85 percent among individuals aged 65 to 74.

Challenges and Opportunities Across Britain

Analyses show that London is recognized as the financial capital of AI in Britain, where 49 percent of digital respondents use this technology weekly, resulting in the highest average savings of £562 reported. However, London residents feel less confident in using digital tools compared to other parts of the country. Wales leads in financial engagement and financial knowledge, with a high percentage of people in the region believing that digital tools have contributed to sustained growth in savings and investments.

These data indicate that financial empowerment should be considered a national priority. While individuals from different generations and regions interact with digital financial tools differently, their common goal is to achieve confidence, capability, and control over their financial future.

In Britain, nearly 88 percent of digital tool users manage their money online weekly. However, this access is only the starting point and cannot guarantee success on its own. The second goal is to convert this access into real outcomes that reflect individuals' varied experiences of financial management. This means incorporating financial education in schools and workplaces early on and reducing the confidence gap in AI-generated advice for younger users.

The Leeds Banking Group, as the largest digital bank in Britain, with around 22 million customers managing their money through our apps, plays a key role in achieving these goals. Our aim is to make finance simpler, smarter, and more connected for every important moment, helping customers make better financial decisions and avoid financial harm using technology and data.

Independent research shows that converting digital access into financial confidence could be worth up to £100 billion for the British economy. This figure translates to nearly £3,500 per household. Confidence in financial management can change individuals' behaviors and steer them towards planning and investing. These changes will not only impact individual lives but will also have national effects.
