A fire near the main road to Machu Picchu in Peru left one victim and injured two others. This incident began on Friday in the Sacred Valley located in the Cusco region, where the Ollantaytambo train station, the busiest station for Machu Picchu travelers, is situated.

Details of the Fire

Miguel Oscco, head of the crisis management and safety office in the Cusco region, stated in an interview that the fire was caused by controlled burning of brush, which farmers do to clear land. He said, "We have one elderly person who was burned in the fire and two others who suffered second-degree burns." The fire spread rapidly due to warm weather conditions, wind, and dry vegetation.

Background of Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, built by the Incas in the 15th century, is located at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level in the Andes mountains and is recognized as an architectural masterpiece. This historical site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983 and attracts around three million visitors annually as the most famous tourist destination in Peru.

Natural and human-induced fires are recognized as a serious challenge in natural and historical areas around the world. This incident in Machu Picchu poses risks not only to local residents and tourists but can also lead to serious damage to the environment and cultural heritage. Local authorities are seeking ways to better manage such incidents and reduce the associated risks.

Given that Machu Picchu is one of the most important and popular tourist destinations in the world, ensuring its safety and preventing similar incidents should be a priority. We hope that this fire serves as a wake-up call for authorities and local people to take more preventive measures.
