Formula 1 has announced that after nearly 40 years of hiatus, this motorsport will return to Africa, with Rwanda chosen as the host for a Grand Prix. The news was released on Tuesday, and Rwanda has signed a 10-year contract to hold this significant event.
Building a New Circuit in Rwanda
Since there is no suitable circuit in Rwanda, the country is set to build a new circuit in the Bugesera region located southeast of the capital Kigali. Formula 1 has stated that this circuit will be ready by the early next decade. The last time Formula 1 was held in Africa was the South African Grand Prix in 1993. Since then, there have been numerous discussions about the return of this sport to the African continent, but no practical steps were taken until this recent announcement.

Cultural and Economic Impacts
The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, described this event as a "success and a milestone for the entire continent" and expressed hope that this occurrence could lead to more Formula 1 events in Africa. Kagame, who has been the President of Rwanda for 25 years, is keenly focused on the development of sports in his country and has worked to make Rwanda a sports hub on the continent.
In recent years, Rwanda has sought to establish sports collaborations with major European football teams and has signed contracts with clubs like Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. However, criticism from some fans and media led Bayern Munich to halt its commercial partnership with "Visit Rwanda" last year. These policies have been described as "sportswashing" by some critics.
Formula 1, being one of the wealthiest sports in the world, could be considered the greatest sporting success for Rwanda and Paul Kagame. This event holds significant importance not only for athletes but also for fans and sports culture in Africa.
While the exact date for the Africa Grand Prix has yet to be determined, this event is expected to become a milestone for motorsport on the African continent.
