France is on the brink of holding nationwide protests. A major demonstration is set to take place across the country on Saturday, where protesters will voice their concerns over various issues including high prices, social inequalities, and an ineffective education system.

History of Protests in France

These protests are taking shape following an initial wave of demonstrations that began last month due to the state of schools in the country. Students have complained about teacher absences and dilapidated facilities. In light of these issues, over 600 demonstrations have been planned across France.

Expectations from the Protests

Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, has called for "calm and respect" ahead of the protests, stating that the right to protest should be accompanied by "respect for individuals and property." Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, announced on French television that a "significant presence" is expected for these protests, with police sources estimating that nearly 200,000 people will participate. Of this number, 40,000 are expected to be in Paris.

However, protesters in Paris will face restrictions, as police have banned gatherings around the Élysée Palace, the Prime Minister's office, and the Champs-Élysées. Additionally, marching in the city center has been prohibited. The main demonstration in Paris is set to start at 2:00 PM at Place de la République and will move north through the city.

Concerns About Violence

Sébastien Lecornu, the Prime Minister of France, expressed concern on Thursday, stating that violence may occur during the protests. He added, "This is a moment of fatigue in the country. We are in a constant atmosphere of crises: wars, inflation, and issues related to purchasing power."

Jordan Bardella, the leader of the far-right National Rally party, also expressed concerns about the potential for clashes, declaring that this day will be chaotic for France. Recent student protests in France have been highly violent, resulting in over 900 police officers and several protesters being injured.

In one notable incident, a young student suffered serious injuries that led to the amputation of one of their hands and damage to several other fingers. The police oversight body is also investigating at least 24 cases of alleged police violence.
