France will increase its defense budget next year despite pressures on public finances. This decision comes as the French government prepares the budget for 2027, which specifically allocates €63.4 billion for military expenses. This figure has increased from €57 billion this year and reflects the government's commitment to strengthening the country's military capabilities.

Details of France's Military Budget

According to documents, about 12 percent of this budget will be allocated to nuclear deterrence and 43 percent to the purchase and maintenance of military equipment. This decision aligns with the planned increases in the military planning law that was approved this summer. The French government has plans to enhance military capabilities through additional orders for key equipment such as air defense systems, anti-drone systems, and artificial intelligence to ensure its sovereignty.

Consequences and Outlook

This increase in the defense budget means that France's military spending has doubled during Emmanuel Macron's presidency since 2017. The French Ministry of Defense is one of the few ministries benefiting from budget increases in 2027. The government has also set a goal to reduce the budget deficit to 5 percent of GDP for next year, while the budget freeze for most other ministries at the 2026 level has been confirmed.

These developments reflect the government's new priorities in national and military security. Given the increasing security challenges, the French government seems to be seeking to strengthen military capabilities and create a stronger defense force to address future threats.
