Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, visited the Peace Village of Panmunjom located in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea on Friday. He briefly stood on the North Korean side inside the barracks and emphasized the importance of the unity of the two Koreas.
Germany's Reunification Experience
During this visit, Merz referred to Germany's experiences regarding reunification and stated: "We hope that Korea will one day have the opportunity to restore its national unity." He noted that the division of a country causes suffering and pain, telling reporters: "You can feel in this place how a country suffers from division and how strong the desire for unity is, at least in this part of the Korean Peninsula."
He also mentioned that during his trip to Seoul, he was asked several questions about Germany's reunification experience. This comes as North Korea has distanced itself from diplomacy with South Korea in recent years and removed the language of unity from its constitution.
Current Challenges in North Korea
In recent years, the political situation on the Korean Peninsula has become highly complex. North Korea has officially changed the status of South Korea to that of a "hostile state" and seems to have reduced its willingness for cooperation and diplomacy. These changes have raised global concerns that affect the unity of the two Koreas.
Merz further addressed the current situation and challenges facing both North and South Korea, emphasizing that unity is only possible through diplomacy and dialogue. He also called on other countries to support this process.
At the end of his trip to Korea, Friedrich Merz stressed the need for global attention to the situation in North and South Korea and called for the international community's efforts to support the process of unity between the two Koreas.
