Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, in his speech at the Bundestag, referred to the increasing gap in intergenerational justice in the country and called for major reforms in social systems. He warned that if necessary actions are not taken, younger generations will bear a heavy burden of costs.
Concern About the Heavy Burden on Future Generations
Merz stated in his remarks: "The gap in intergenerational justice in our country has opened up, and this gap will widen if we do not take action." He believes that children and young people may have to bear a heavier burden that is not justifiable under the principles of justice. He also pointed out that previous governments, including those led by his own party, have not paid enough attention to the long-term consequences of their decisions.

Comprehensive Social Reform Program
Merz announced that his government has developed a comprehensive program for reforms in various areas including retirement, care, the labor market, and economic competition. He emphasized that justice should mean equal opportunities and fair rewards for achievements, not a redistribution of resources at the expense of those who contribute to the economy.
He added that these reforms are essential to maintain Germany's prosperity and ensure that younger generations do not bear an unfair burden.
Criticism of Extremism
Merz also criticized political forces on both extremist sides, whether left or right, that are deliberately dividing society. He said: "It seems you want to create chaos because you hope to exploit it politically." He warned of the danger of extremism felt in national and regional parliaments in Germany as well as in everyday life.
Merz acknowledged that extremist movements may capitalize on legitimate grievances and feelings of injustice, arguing that only constructive political action can provide an effective response to these challenges. He also emphasized that "justice does not come to us through the exclusion of minorities" and called for policies that promote equal opportunities and fairness between generations.
Response to Criticism Regarding Support for Ukraine
Merz also responded to criticisms from right and left extremists who say that support for Ukraine comes at the expense of social costs. He stated: "No euro has been taken from social costs" and added that the exemption from legal borrowing limits allows the government to finance defense and aid to Ukraine through additional credit.
He also accused extremist parties of trying to divide Germany and stressed the necessity of unity in the face of social challenges.
