Friendship and financial pressure is a topic that has received significant attention in recent years. In a scene from the second season of the show "Friends," Rachel, Phoebe, and Joey, who have low-paying jobs, talk about their financial problems with their wealthy friends Ross, Monica, and Chandler. Ross says he never thinks about money, and Rachel replies, "Because you have money!" This dialogue aired in 1995, but this dynamic still exists in friendships in 2026.
Financial Pressure in Celebrations and Parties
Friendships are affected by costs, especially on occasions like birthdays. One of my friends wanted us to go to a famous Italian restaurant in London for her birthday. However, when it was my birthday, I couldn't ask my friends to pay the same amount for me, so I hosted a home party instead.

Income Disparity and Emotions in Friendships
Some of my friends complain about the high costs of attending weddings and various parties. This financial pressure can lead to feelings of anger and dissatisfaction. In friendly relationships, this issue is rarely discussed openly, and the person with a lower income often has to compromise or refrain from participating in activities.
Psychologist Sylvia Douchwich states that in our society, discussing money is considered a taboo. Many people feel uncomfortable sharing their income, which can lead to feelings of shame and judgment in friendships. While money is not just a tool, it is also seen as a measure of values and power.
With the rising cost of living, financial inequality in friendships becomes more apparent. We need to find new ways to talk about money in friendships. Can we plan in a way that doesn't automatically exclude someone from the group? Can friends with different incomes maintain true equality?
Friendship requires awareness of the costs of others' choices, and empathy to prevent financial pressure on each other is of great importance. This issue shows how money can affect our relationships.
