Gabriel Attal, France's budget minister, outlined his plan for €150 billion in savings over the next five years at a major conference in Paris. This program is designed to improve the financial situation and restore balance to the country's public accounts. Attal emphasized that this amount is only a "foundation" and that further savings may be needed to achieve greater financial goals.

Commitment to Reducing the Budget Deficit

Attal, as a candidate from the Renaissance party, presented himself as someone who has "provided the most details about his budget roadmap." He committed to reducing France's public budget deficit to below 3 percent of GDP before 2032 and has also set a target to bring this deficit to zero by 2030.

Economic Plans and Policies

In the face of a potential debt crisis, Attal announced that he is preparing a "rescue plan" to address critical economic situations. In this regard, he has spoken with several prominent economists, including Xavier Jaravel and Natasha Wala. Attal also referred to pension reforms and reductions in social spending along with a decrease in the number of civil servants using artificial intelligence.

The candidate further indicated that he will soon introduce "a comprehensive review of the organization of public powers" and intends to reduce "a layer" of the administrative structure. He also refrained from providing further details regarding the 2026 finance bill project when asked, remaining expectant for its presentation by the government in early October.

Attal firmly opposed the idea of reducing France's share in the European Union budget, stating: "This issue does not satisfy me." However, he noted that there may be a "possibility" of distributing fines paid by digital giants to member countries.
