Germany announced on Saturday that it will continue its sanctions against Russia due to the war in Ukraine. This decision was made one day after the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced a temporary suspension of oil sanctions against Russia.

Sanctions and Their Impacts

Stefan Kornius, spokesperson for the German government, stated: "The federal government has taken note of the United States' decision regarding oil deliveries to Russia." He also emphasized that "the federal government is committed to the decisions regarding sanctions against Russia and is working with its European partners for further sanctions."

Germany remains the largest financial supporter of Ukraine in Europe, and during last week's visit, Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated Germany's strong support for Ukraine. Merz emphasized that Germany's support for Ukraine in its self-defense efforts is unwavering, and diplomatic efforts for a peaceful solution continue.

Reaction to Schröder's Presence at Putin's Birthday Celebration

The presence of Gerhard Schröder, the former Chancellor of Germany, at Vladimir Putin's birthday celebration in Moscow has also drawn severe criticism. Franziska Brantner, one of the leaders of the German Green Party, has called for a review of Schröder's membership in the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She described this action as "politically unacceptable" and stated: "While Schröder celebrates with Putin, civilians in Ukraine are losing their lives again due to Russian attacks."

The Social Democratic Party has also responded to the criticism, with Hubertus Heil, former Minister of Labor in Germany, expressing anger and concern over Schröder's behavior. He said: "Schröder's warm embrace with Putin in Moscow has deeply troubled me."

Despite the temporary suspension of U.S. sanctions, Germany will continue its sanctions against Russia. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Germany has not imported any oil or petroleum products from Russia. The country is currently relying on sourcing its resources from other countries, and according to the spokesperson for the Minister of Economic Affairs, "We fully support the sanctions packages."
