Germany is exploring new defense partnerships and participation in the GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme) with Italy and Japan. This action follows the failure of Germany's fighter aircraft programs with France earlier this year.

Germany's initial steps in defense cooperation

A senior German official, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "This is neither a decision nor a preliminary decision. This is a small initial step in Germany's efforts to seek partnerships in this area." The official also added that Germany has not yet made a definitive decision and is reviewing all possible options.

Focus on European solutions

The official emphasized that it seems the Chancellor of Germany prefers to pursue European solutions over actions that only benefit Germany. He also stated: "We are in a very early stage of evaluating options and no decision has been made yet."

Earlier this year, Canada was introduced as the first observer in the GCAP program, which could pave the way for full membership in the future. Other potential members of this program include Saudi Arabia. However, the three member countries of GCAP are cautious about expanding this club and are concerned about reducing work for each partner country or delays in the programs.

New partnership to counter hybrid threats

The British leader also mentioned a new partnership with Germany to counter hybrid threats from countries like Russia. This German official said: "Defense ministries have been tasked with exploring ways to expand this partnership." This cooperation reflects Germany's efforts to strengthen its defense security against various threats.
