Germany's Foreign Minister, Johan Wadfool, announced on Friday that Vladimir Putin's participation, the President of Russia, in the G20 summit could be the starting point for "serious negotiations" to end Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. These remarks came after Donald Trump, the President of the United States, officially invited Putin to attend the G20 summit scheduled to be held in December in Miami.

Concerns of Global Leaders

Although Trump's invitation has received mixed reactions from global leaders, the German Foreign Minister specifically emphasized the need to seize this opportunity. Many leaders, including Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, and Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, have expressed concerns about this invitation. However, Wadfool adopted a more optimistic tone during a press conference in Ottawa with his Canadian counterpart.

Opportunity for Negotiation

The German Foreign Minister stated, "This invitation could really be a test for Vladimir Putin to come to the negotiating table. Such opportunities must be utilized." He also reminded that they have repeatedly urged the Russian government and Putin to come to the negotiating table, and if this possibility exists, it might be the beginning of serious negotiations.

Wadfool also emphasized that a necessary condition for meaningful dialogue would be the establishment of a ceasefire during negotiations. This viewpoint comes as tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue, and any negotiation without appropriate preconditions may lead to failure.

Canada's Reaction

Anita Anand, Canada's Foreign Minister, also expressed her surprise at Trump's invitation to Putin, adding that Canada will participate in the summit regardless, as it represents the "truth of diplomacy." These remarks reflect Canada's willingness and determination to actively engage in global diplomacy, even as some countries have expressed doubts about this invitation.

The German Foreign Ministry has yet to respond to requests for immediate comment on this matter. The White House's invitation to Putin is the latest attempt by the United States to reintegrate Moscow into international diplomatic circles, and this summit could lead to Putin's first in-person appearance at the G20 since 2019.
