Google has indirectly encouraged millions of users to adopt artificial intelligence through changes in its search interface. If you have used Google for searches in the past few months, you may have noticed that the search experience has changed. Now, by asking certain questions, an AI overview appears that encourages the user to use the chatbot in AI mode.
Increase in AI Mode Usage
Google has announced that the AI mode has over 1 billion monthly users, a figure that matches the estimated 1 billion monthly active users of ChatGPT in May. Google search usage has peaked, with most of this activity involving artificial intelligence. This year, many Google users have expressed skepticism about AI, but Google has consistently implemented design changes that guide users toward these interfaces.

User Behavior Changes in AI Mode
Users in AI mode behave significantly differently. They write longer questions and engage in different searches. They search for article ideas, study guides, and financial advice, and generally have high confidence in the responses from AI mode. This behavioral change may become a habit, and experts say users need something better to change their behavior.
These developments are the result of a ten-year strategy by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who announced in 2016 that Google would be an "AI-first company." In 2024, Google began providing AI summaries in response to user searches, with these summaries now appearing in 40% of Google searches in the United States.
These changes have not only impacted user behavior but also threaten the business model of sites that rely on advertising revenue. For instance, the use of AI in online shopping has doubled, and this change may provide less information for retailers.
