Beo Creek, the new mayor of Greater Manchester, announced his readiness to host Donald Trump at the G20 summit to be held next year in England. Creek stated in his recent remarks that he would wear his "big shoes" for this meeting to engage seriously and professionally with Trump, even if there are differences of opinion.
New and Serious Interactions with Trump
Creek, who has just returned from a trip to New York to meet the city's mayor, said at the Labour Party conference: "I'm not sure this is the friendship I'm looking for" and jokingly referred to his friendship with Zohar Mamdani, the mayor of New York. He continued: "But there is a serious point, right? If you say you want to be a global city with a growing economy and provide services for your citizens, you have to put on your big shoes."
Political and Social Implications
Creek also expressed caution regarding Trump's recent call about the reunification of Ireland and the challenges associated with it. He pointed to the Good Friday Agreement, which has helped bring peace to Ireland, stating that "cool and calm heads" must prevail to prevent escalating tensions. He emphasized that the mayor of Greater Manchester does not have the authority to send a direct message to the President of the United States about his feelings regarding where he grew up.
Creek recently met with Mamdani at a session of Urban20, which brings together mayors from G20 countries. He also assisted individuals moving into new affordable apartments in New York by distributing coffee machines. These actions reflect his efforts to address similar challenges in many major cities around the world.
Creek concluded by emphasizing that leading mayors around the world can play a key role in changing the landscape of national politics and demonstrate how effective actions can solve issues.
